Check December availability in Punta Cana
Punta Cana in December is about as close to a sure thing as Caribbean travel gets: dry-season sunshine, warm sea water, the end of hurricane season and a festive mood at the resorts. The catch is that the month splits in two. The first half is relaxed and usually better value, while the stretch from roughly December 20 to New Year’s Day is one of the busiest and most expensive periods of the year. Here are the weather numbers, the sargassum outlook, crowds and prices, how Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve work at the resorts, and what to pack.
What is the weather like in Punta Cana in December?
December marks the start of Punta Cana’s drier, breezier winter season. Weather Spark, which models long-term climate averages from historical weather data, gives these December figures:
| December average | Punta Cana |
|---|---|
| Daytime high | About 83°F (28°C) |
| Nighttime low | About 74°F (23°C) |
| Sea temperature | About 81°F (27°C) |
| Chance of a wet day | About 16% |
| Rainfall (31-day total) | About 1.8 in (46 mm) early in the month, 1.4 in (36 mm) by the end |
| Wind | About 13 mph (21 km/h), mostly from the east |
| Daylight | About 11 hours; sunset between roughly 5:55 and 6:07 p.m. |
In practice that means beach weather almost every day, warm evenings and comfortable sea water. Early and late December feel much the same. With sunset around 6 p.m., plan pool and beach time for the morning and early afternoon. For a month-by-month comparison, see our Punta Cana weather by month guide.

Does it rain a lot in Punta Cana in December?
Not usually. December is drier than late summer and autumn, and rain tends to come as short passing showers rather than all-day downpours. Some climate sources report higher totals, partly because any brief shower counts as a rain day. Plan for the odd cloudy hour, not a washed-out week.
Is Punta Cana windy in December?
It can be breezy. Weather Spark’s averages make December one of Punta Cana’s windiest months, with steady easterly trade winds of around 13 mph. The breeze keeps the heat pleasant but builds waves on exposed beaches. Reef-sheltered stretches, such as parts of southern Bávaro Beach, Cabeza de Toro and Juanillo Beach in Cap Cana, tend to stay calmer than open-surf beaches like Macao or the Atlantic shoreline of Uvero Alto.
Is December still hurricane season in Punta Cana?
No. The U.S. National Hurricane Center defines the Atlantic hurricane season as June 1 to November 30. Storms occasionally form outside those dates, but December carries far less risk than the August-to-October peak. Our best time to visit Punta Cana guide explains the full seasonal pattern.
Is there sargassum in Punta Cana in December?
Sargassum, the brown seaweed that washes up on Caribbean beaches, is seasonal. The University of South Florida’s Optical Oceanography Lab, which publishes monthly outlooks, notes that it typically peaks around June or July and reaches its minimum in the winter months.
2026 has been a heavy year: USF’s July outlook expected it to be the second-largest sargassum year after 2025. Its October 2026 bulletin reported that amounts had dropped substantially and were expected to keep decreasing until around the end of November or December, although some beaching around the Caribbean was likely to continue at much lower severity. In short, December is usually one of the better months, but not guaranteed to be seaweed-free. Our Punta Cana sargassum guide explains which beaches tend to fare best.
How busy and expensive is Punta Cana in December?
December opens the high season, and the holidays are the busiest stretch of all. Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) reported 1,087,621 passengers in December 2025, up 11.5% on December 2024, with three consecutive weekly flight records. Shortly before the holidays, the airport’s airside operations director said Monday, December 29, 2025 was expected to be the busiest day in its history, with around 51,000 passengers on 155 scheduled flights.
That traffic shows up in prices. As a rule, the first half of December is the sweet spot: dry-season weather, emptier resorts and lower rates. From around December 20, flights and rooms climb, popular categories sell out and some properties set minimum stays. For a realistic budget, read our Punta Cana trip cost breakdown, and remember that rates carry 18% ITBIS tax plus a 10% service charge; our guide to Punta Cana all-inclusive taxes, tipping and hidden costs explains that 28% and what to set aside for holiday tips.
Early December vs. the holiday weeks
If your dates are flexible, travel in the first half of December: the same weather as Christmas week, shorter lines and usually much better rates. If you must travel over the holidays, book flights and rooms as early as possible and expect the busiest airport days around the turn of the year.
Christmas in Punta Cana: what happens at the resorts?
In the Dominican Republic, the big night is Nochebuena, Christmas Eve, when families gather for a late dinner. Typical dishes include puerco asado (roast pork), moro de guandules (rice with pigeon peas and coconut), ensalada rusa (potato salad), pasteles en hoja (banana leaves filled with meat) and soft telera bread, often with ponche, an eggnog-style drink, or jengibre, a hot ginger infusion. December 25 is a public holiday, and the season runs until Three Kings Day (Día de Reyes) in early January.
Resorts turn this into a festive program: decorated lobbies, a special Christmas Eve dinner or buffet, live music and, at family resorts, a visit from Santa. Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Punta Cana, for example, advertises Christmas Eve and Christmas Day events with a themed dinner, live entertainment and a Santa Claus visit, and Royalton resorts have promoted tree lightings and gala dinners. Programs change every year, so check your resort’s schedule.

Do resorts charge extra for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve dinners?
It depends on the resort. At many all-inclusives the holiday gala is simply part of your stay. Others add a compulsory gala fee: some booking listings for Punta Cana resorts state that a fee for a mandatory New Year’s Eve gala dinner is included in the total price displayed for stays on December 31. Elsewhere, holiday dinners are sold as paid events. The Westin Puntacana Resort’s 2026 holiday page, for instance, lists a Christmas Eve dinner by the sea at US$95++ per adult and a New Year’s Eve gala dinner from US$130++ per adult (US$160++ if booked after December 29), with taxes and service added.
Before you pay, ask the resort in writing whether a supplement applies, how much it is per adult and per child, and whether your rate already includes it. Ask about the dress code too: many à la carte restaurants expect long pants and closed shoes for men, and galas are usually dressier. Our Punta Cana all-inclusive dining guide explains reservations and dress codes.
New Year’s Eve in Punta Cana: galas, parties and fireworks
December 31 is the biggest night of the season at most resorts. The usual format is a festive buffet or set menu, then a party with live music or a DJ, a countdown and a midnight toast. Princess Hotels, for example, has described its Dominican New Year’s Eve as a gala dinner in two styles, plated à la carte or a large themed buffet, followed by a party mixing Dominican, American and Spanish traditions, including the 12 grapes at Spanish midnight.
Some resorts go bigger. On December 31, 2025, the adults-only W Punta Cana staged “La Gran Verbena,” a take on a Dominican street party with DJ sets, acrobatics and Latin rhythms. Fireworks are part of many celebrations along the coast, but whether your resort puts on a display varies, so do not choose a hotel just for the fireworks. Book any New Year’s Eve à la carte dinner the moment reservations open. And because Bávaro faces the open sea to the east, many guests stay up, or get up early, to watch the first sunrise of the year from the beach.

What to pack for Punta Cana in December
Pack for summer, plus a few extras for breezy evenings and holiday dinners:
- Lightweight clothes and at least two swimsuits; things dry slowly in humid air.
- A light sweater or wrap for windy evenings and air-conditioned restaurants.
- A compact rain jacket or small umbrella for short showers.
- One dressier outfit for the holiday gala; for men, long pants, a collared shirt and closed shoes cover most dress codes.
- High-SPF, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, because the tropical sun is strong even in winter.
