Uber Punta Cana guide: quick answers

  • Uber works, with limits: the app is active in Punta Cana, but UberX pickups at resort lobbies and the airport arrivals curb are restricted. Uber Select (licensed tourist taxis booked through the app) often fills the gap.
  • Taxis: run by local unions, with fixed zone rates, no meters and usually cash payment. Agree on the price before you get in.
  • Buses (guaguas): very cheap and fine for short daytime hops along the main roads, but not for suitcases.
  • To Santo Domingo: the Expreso Bávaro coach takes about three hours.
  • Airport arrivals: a pre-booked transfer or the official taxi line is the low-stress choice; Uber means meeting your driver outside the terminal.

Find a Punta Cana resort with an easy airport transfer

Can you use Uber in Punta Cana? Yes, but not quite the way you would in Miami, Toronto or Madrid. Uber in Punta Cana operates alongside a powerful network of local taxi unions, and that shapes where drivers can pick you up, what you pay and how smooth the ride feels. This guide explains how Uber, taxis, guaguas, resort shuttles and rental cars really work around Bávaro in 2026, with realistic price ranges and the rules that matter at Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ).

We checked Uber’s own pages, the airport’s website, Dominican press coverage of the Uber–taxi dispute and several 2026 local guides in early November 2026. Fares change often, so treat the approximate US-dollar ranges below as a sanity check, not a tariff.

Does Uber work in Punta Cana in 2026?

Uber lists Punta Cana as an active city where riders can request a car 24/7. In practice the app offers two very different rides. UberX connects you with private drivers and is usually the cheapest. Uber Select, in the resort zone, is essentially the licensed tourist-taxi service booked through the app: in November 2021 Uber, the transit authority INTRANT and the tourist-taxi confederation Codotatur signed an agreement letting Bávaro and Punta Cana taxi drivers join the platform under that option.

That deal did not end the friction. In November 2020 INTRANT asked Uber to stop serving the areas around airports, and in 2021 Politur, the tourist police, investigated taxi drivers who pulled two Spanish tourists out of an Uber in Uvero Alto. Those drivers cited INTRANT regulation 515-21, which, as reported by Diario Libre, requires app-based taxis to stay at least one kilometer from areas where tourist taxis operate. Recent guides still describe resort and airport pickups as the weak spot; drop-offs are rarely a problem.

Where Uber works best, and where it doesn’t

  • Bávaro, El Cortecito, Los Corales and Verón: the most consistent UberX coverage, handy for restaurants, supermarkets and malls.
  • Resort lobbies: UberX generally cannot pick up inside the big all-inclusives. Moving the pin to the main gate or public road often unlocks it; otherwise the app may only offer Uber Select.
  • Cap Cana, Macao and Uvero Alto: UberX is hard to find and Uber Select is often the only choice in the app.
  • Long trips (Bayahibe, La Romana, Santo Domingo): availability is patchy, so book a transfer or take the bus instead.

How much does Uber cost compared with a taxi?

Uber shows the fare before you confirm, and prices rise with demand (heavy rain is a classic surge trigger). The Punta Cana Travel Blog’s January 2026 examples put an UberX from the airport to the Meliá area of Bávaro at around US$16, against around US$26 for Uber Select, and a hop from Los Corales to the Jumbo supermarket at about US$5. A union taxi for that airport run typically costs US$30 or more, so UberX is the budget option whenever it is available.

Uber Punta Cana airport pickups: what happens at PUJ

Dropping off is easy: Uber says riders are left curbside at the terminal they choose. Pickups are the tricky part. The airport’s website shows Uber pickup areas at both terminals but still marks the details as “TBD” (checked November 2026), and several 2026 guides report that drivers ask passengers to walk to a meeting point outside arrivals, partly to avoid trouble with the taxi cooperatives that hold the curb.

If you try it, get mobile data working before you land, request the ride once you have your bags, follow the in-app meeting instructions and match the plate, car and driver name. Uber warns never to accept people offering Uber rides inside the terminal. For a calm first ride, a pre-booked transfer or the official taxi line is simpler; our Punta Cana airport transfers guide compares the options, and our guide to flights to Punta Cana explains Terminals A and B.

Never switch an app ride to cash

If a driver offers to cancel the trip and take cash instead, decline and ask them to cancel so you can rebook. An off-app ride loses GPS tracking, the upfront price and Uber’s support if something goes wrong.

Taxis in Punta Cana: unions, zone rates and how to pay

Taxis in the Bávaro–Punta Cana area are organized by local unions and associations (sindicatos), not metered fleets. Fares are fixed by zone, posted at the airport and many resort taxi stands, and rarely negotiable in the resort zone. Expect to pay cash in US dollars or Dominican pesos, and carry small bills because drivers often lack change. Our Punta Cana currency guide explains when pesos beat dollars.

Recent 2026 guides give these approximate one-way, per-vehicle ranges from the airport: around US$30–55 to Bávaro and Arena Gorda, around US$25–35 to Cap Cana and around US$60–90 to Uvero Alto, with larger vans costing more. Inside the resort zone, short hops are typically quoted at around US$15–25, and a Bávaro–Cap Cana ride at around US$40–60. Always confirm the price before the car moves.

How to take a taxi without overpaying

  • Ask the front desk for the posted rate to your destination first.
  • Confirm the total, the currency and that it is per vehicle (it usually is) before setting off.
  • For a round trip or a day out, agree on waiting time and the return fare up front.
  • Use marked taxis from official stands; ignore touts and unmarked cars.
  • Tips are not built into the fare; our Punta Cana tipping guide covers what is customary.

Local buses (guaguas): the cheapest way to get around

Guaguas are the vans and minibuses that run along the main roads linking Bávaro, Friusa, Verón, El Cortecito and nearby towns. There is no printed map or timetable: you flag one down and tell the driver’s assistant (the cobrador) where you are going. Local guides put a ride at roughly US$1–2. They are a fun, very local way to reach a supermarket or mall in daylight, but they get crowded, rarely have room for luggage and are not realistic for airport runs. Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket.

Is there a bus from Punta Cana to Santo Domingo?

Yes. The Expreso Bávaro coach links Santo Domingo and Bávaro–Punta Cana in both directions, with Bávaro stops at Cruce de Friusa and Cruce de Verón (Plaza Sitrabapu, in front of Banco BHD) and Santo Domingo stops on Calle Juan Sánchez Ramírez at Avenida Máximo Gómez and at Parque Enriquillo. The company says the trip takes about three hours and asks passengers to arrive an hour early; recent guides quote fares well under US$10 one way. If you only want the Colonial Zone, compare it with a tour in our Santo Domingo day trip guide.

What about motoconchos?

Motoconchos (motorbike taxis) are cheap and everywhere, but passenger helmets are rare and road accidents are the main risk. Skip them at night, after drinks, with luggage or with children.

Resort shuttles, trams and free rides

Before paying for any ride, check what your resort already includes. The biggest complexes run their own internal transport: the Bahia Principe complex in Bávaro has shuttle trams, Barceló Bávaro Palace a covered open-air train and Hard Rock Punta Cana an internal tram. Riu Republica includes a free shuttle to the main Riu pool-party arena. Some resorts also run shuttles to sister hotels, beaches or malls such as BlueMall Punta Cana; ask at the front desk for times and fees.

Should you rent a car instead?

Renting makes sense if you plan several day trips, are staying in a villa or apartment, or want to explore beyond the resort zone. According to the airport, brands such as Hertz, Avis, Budget, National, Alamo, Europcar, Enterprise and Sixt, plus local firms, have desks across Terminals A and B. For a one-week all-inclusive stay with one excursion, taxis plus a transfer usually cost less once insurance, fuel and parking are added. Safety tips for getting around Punta Cana

  • Sort out mobile data before you land; our Punta Cana SIM card and eSIM guide compares Claro, Altice and eSIMs.
  • On any app ride, check the plate, car model and driver name before getting in, and share the trip with someone.
  • Keep payment in the app where possible and avoid flashing large amounts of cash.
  • After dark, use an app ride, a resort shuttle or a hotel-called taxi rather than walking unfamiliar roads.
  • Don’t share your room number or plans with drivers you have just met.
  • If a dispute with a driver turns tense, stay calm, step away and ask your resort to contact Politur, the tourist police.

Our take

Use Uber in Punta Cana for what it does best: cheap, tracked rides around Bávaro, Los Corales and Verón, requested from a resort gate or public street. For airport arrivals, Cap Cana and Uvero Alto, a pre-booked transfer, Uber Select or a union taxi at the posted rate is calmer. Guaguas are a cheap daytime adventure, and Expreso Bávaro is the budget way to Santo Domingo. If you plan to explore a lot, price a rental car, and choose your base with our where to stay in Punta Cana guide so you need fewer rides in the first place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take an Uber from Punta Cana airport?

Often yes, but not from the arrivals curb. Drop-offs at PUJ are easy, while pickups usually mean meeting the driver outside the terminal, and the airport still lists its rideshare pickup details as TBD. With kids, lots of luggage or a late landing, a pre-booked transfer or the official taxi line is simpler.

Is Uber cheaper than a taxi in Punta Cana?

UberX usually is. In one January 2026 example, UberX from the airport to Bávaro cost around US$16 versus around US$26 for Uber Select, while union taxis typically charge from around US$30 for the same trip. The catch is that UberX is not always available where you need it.

Do taxis in Punta Cana take credit cards?

In practice most union taxis expect cash, in US dollars or Dominican pesos, at posted zone rates. Carry small bills, confirm the price and currency before you leave, and use Uber or a prepaid transfer if you prefer to pay by card.

Is there public transportation in Punta Cana?

There is no metro, and local transport is mostly informal: guaguas (vans and minibuses) run along the main roads for roughly US$1–2 a ride, best for short daytime trips without luggage. The Expreso Bávaro coach links Bávaro with Santo Domingo in about three hours.

Is Uber safe in Punta Cana?

The ride has the usual app protections: tracked trips, upfront prices and driver details. The main risk is friction with taxi drivers at pickup points, so request rides from public roads or resort gates, refuse off-app cash deals and choose a transfer or Uber Select where UberX is unwelcome.
