Punta Cana resort dining in 60 seconds
- Two systems: some resorts are walk-in (Secrets, Dreams, Breathless and Zoëtry, Hyatt Ziva and Zilara, Riu Palace Macao); others need à la carte reservations (Barceló, Princess, Bahia Principe and, for most tables, Lopesan).
- Book on day one at reservation-based resorts: popular restaurants fill up, and some resorts only guarantee a set number of à la carte dinners.
- Pack long pants: most à la carte dinners ask men for long trousers and a collared shirt; buffets are more relaxed.
- Room service and top-shelf drinks are not universal: they depend on the brand and sometimes on your room category.
- Food safety: drink bottled water and use common sense at the buffet.
Compare Punta Cana all-inclusive resorts for your dates
“All-inclusive” sounds simple until your first evening, when you discover that the steakhouse is fully booked, the Japanese restaurant needs long pants and the room service menu costs extra in your room type. Dining rules in Punta Cana vary more between resort brands than almost anything else, and they shape your holiday more than the size of the pool. This guide explains how restaurants work, which resorts need reservations, what the dress codes mean and what may cost extra, based on the resorts’ own published policies.
How all-inclusive restaurants work in Punta Cana
Almost every resort follows the same pattern: one or two buffets for breakfast, lunch and often dinner; several à la carte restaurants (Italian, Japanese, steakhouse, seafood, Mexican and so on) mostly open for dinner; snack bars, beach grills and a café during the day; and, at some resorts, room service. Two details catch people out:
- Not every restaurant opens every night. Secrets Royal Beach states that restaurant openings rotate through the week and that the number open for each meal depends on occupancy; Majestic and Hard Rock also note that availability and schedules can change.
- Some venues are club-only or cost extra. Preferred Club, Premium Level and similar upgrades often add private restaurants or extra meals, and a few gourmet rooms sit outside the all-inclusive entirely.
Do you need reservations? Resort brands compared
This is the single biggest difference between brands. The table summarises each one’s published approach; always confirm at check-in, because policies change.
| Brand or resort | À la carte reservations | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Secrets, Dreams, Breathless, Zoëtry | Not required | Teppanyaki tables usually need booking; Bordeaux’s wine cellar at Secrets Royal Beach is reserved and charged separately |
| Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana | First-come, first-served | The Blind Butcher at Hyatt Ziva is not part of the all-inclusive |
| RIU | Varies by hotel | Riu Palace Macao says no reservations are needed; the RIU app can book tables where required |
| Barceló Bávaro Palace | Required, made on site | Four à la carte dinners guaranteed per week; Premium Level gets unlimited bookings and can book before arrival |
| Lopesan Costa Bávaro | Most tables reserved | The rest are walk-in; Unique guests get priority tables |
| Grand Bávaro Princess | Required | Booked at the hotel through the app |
| Bahia Principe | Required | Booked at the hotel via the app or guest relations; semi-formal dress |
| Hard Rock Punta Cana | Mostly not required | Toro, Zen and Ciao (dinner) need bookings; Youyu and Montserrat Manor cost extra |
| Majestic | Varies by restaurant | Ask at check-in; availability depends on occupancy |
Walk-in resorts: no booking, but expect peak-time queues
The Unlimited-Luxury plan at Secrets, Dreams and Breathless includes “limitless access to gourmet à la carte dining options without reservations required”, in the words of the Secrets Royal Beach resort guide, and Zoëtry Agua says its restaurants never require reservations. Hyatt Ziva and Zilara Cap Cana work on a first-come, first-served basis, with Zilara guests sharing the Ziva restaurants. The trade-off is waiting: at 7:30 pm in high season the most popular room may have a queue, so eat at opening time or after 9 pm, or wait at the bar.

Reservation-based resorts: plan your week on arrival
Barceló Bávaro Palace is the clearest example. It guarantees four à la carte dinners per week of stay, with more subject to availability, and bookings are made once you are at the resort, except for Premium Level guests, who get unlimited reservations and can book by email before arrival. Its French restaurant, La Comédie, carries a supplement unless you are Premium Level. Lopesan Costa Bávaro reserves most of each restaurant for bookings and seats the rest on a first-come basis, while Unique by Lopesan guests can reserve priority tables until 5 pm; our Lopesan Costa Bávaro review covers its restaurants. At Grand Bávaro Princess, every à la carte restaurant needs a booking made at the hotel through the app, and Bahia Principe books à la carte dinners on site through its app or guest relations.
Book your dinners on day one
At reservation-based resorts, open the app or visit guest services within hours of check-in and book every à la carte night you want, including your last evening. Leaving it to the day often means 6 pm or 9:45 pm slots only.

What is the dress code for dinner at Punta Cana resorts?
Daytime is swimwear with a cover-up; evenings are where rules apply. The most common labels, with the resorts’ own definitions:
- Casual Elegance (Secrets Royal Beach): long pants for men, short-sleeved dress shirts or collared shirts, sneakers or sandals; no sleeveless shirts or flip-flops.
- Formal (Secrets Royal Beach): long pants, collared shirt and dress shoes for men; blouses, skirts, slacks or dresses with dress shoes for women.
- Smart Casual (Hyatt Ziva and Zilara): dress shorts, closed-toe shoes and collared short-sleeved shirts for men.
- Evening Elegant (Lopesan Costa Bávaro): long trousers, chinos or jeans, with a short- or long-sleeved shirt for men; dresses, long pants and dress shoes or sandals for women.
- Evening Elegant (Majestic): collared shirts with sleeves, long pants and closed shoes for men.
- Resort Casual (Hard Rock): long pants, jeans or dress shorts with a collared or polo shirt; no sleeveless shirts or flip-flops.
In short, one or two pairs of long trousers and closed shoes cover almost every resort. Our Punta Cana packing list turns this into a capsule wardrobe.
Buffet or à la carte: how to get the best of both
Buffets are the backbone of breakfast and the easiest option with children: wide choice, made-to-order egg and omelette stations, local dishes and no waiting for a table. Arrive near opening time for the freshest trays, and look for themed nights. À la carte restaurants are quieter, cooked to order and better for a romantic dinner, but at large resorts they can be slower on busy nights. A good rhythm for a week is buffet breakfasts, a beach-grill lunch and à la carte dinners on most nights, with one buffet dinner when you want something quick.
Allergies and special diets are best raised at check-in rather than at the table. Lopesan, for example, says its restaurants can prepare meals adapted to guests’ dietary needs on request through reception.
Room service, top-shelf drinks and what costs extra
Room service is included 24 hours a day under Unlimited-Luxury at Secrets, Dreams and Breathless, and Hard Rock and Riu Palace Bávaro also list 24-hour room service. Lopesan says room service is free for its guests. At Grand Bávaro Princess it is included only with Platinum rooms and charged in the bungalow rooms, and at Barceló Bávaro Palace it is a Premium Level perk. At adults-only JOIA Bávaro by Iberostar, butler service comes with the Butler Suite categories, so check what your room type includes before you rely on in-room dining.

Drinks follow the same pattern. Unlimited-Luxury includes international and domestic top-shelf spirits. Lopesan includes a selection of premium drinks, with a longer menu for an extra charge. Princess includes alcohol in every category, but Platinum guests get different brands, and certain wines and champagnes are excluded for everyone. If premium labels matter to you, compare club levels; our VIP club levels guide explains what each upgrade adds.
Extra-charge venues to know about: the Bordeaux wine cellar at Secrets Royal Beach, La Comédie and the private wine-cellar dinners at Barceló Bávaro Palace, The Blind Butcher at Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana, and Youyu and Montserrat Manor at Hard Rock (see our Hard Rock Punta Cana review). Tips are never compulsory, since the 10% service charge is on the bill; our taxes and tipping guide explains it.

One exception to the rule: Eden Roc Cap Cana, the Dominican Republic’s only Relais & Châteaux property, sells rooms either without meals or with a full all-inclusive package, and its 18% ITBIS and 10% service charge are added on top. Read the rate name carefully before booking a luxury resort.
Food safety at Punta Cana all-inclusive resorts
Big resort kitchens serve thousands of meals a day, and most stomach trouble comes from a few avoidable habits. Drink bottled water, including for brushing teeth if you are sensitive; choose hot dishes that are steaming and cold dishes that are properly chilled; be cautious with seafood and salads that have sat out at a lunch buffet in the heat; and pace yourself with the open bar in the sun. Our drinking water and buffet safety guide goes into detail.

Our verdict
If you hate planning, choose a walk-in resort such as Secrets, Dreams, Breathless or Hyatt Ziva and Zilara, and accept the occasional queue. If you prefer a guaranteed table, a reservation-based resort works well, as long as you book your whole week on arrival day or pay for a level such as Barceló’s Premium Level that removes the limits. Either way, pack long pants and check which restaurants, drinks and room service your room category actually includes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Punta Cana all-inclusive resorts require restaurant reservations?
It depends on the brand. Secrets, Dreams, Breathless and Zoëtry are walk-in, and Hyatt Ziva and Zilara are first-come, first-served. Barceló, Princess and Bahia Principe require à la carte bookings, Lopesan reserves most of its tables, and RIU and Majestic vary by hotel or restaurant.
How do I book à la carte restaurants at my resort?
Usually through the resort’s app or at guest services after check-in. Barceló Bávaro Palace only accepts bookings once you are at the hotel, unless you are a Premium Level guest, who can book by email before arrival. Book all the nights you want on your first day.
What should I wear to dinner at a Punta Cana resort?
For most à la carte restaurants, men need long pants, a collared or sleeved shirt and closed shoes or smart sandals, and women wear dresses, skirts or smart trousers. Buffets are more relaxed, but swimwear needs a cover-up. Some resorts, such as Hyatt Ziva or Hard Rock, accept dress shorts at certain venues.
Is room service included at Punta Cana all-inclusives?
Not always. It is included around the clock under Unlimited-Luxury at Secrets, Dreams and Breathless, and at resorts such as Hard Rock and Lopesan, but at Grand Bávaro Princess it is limited to Platinum rooms, and at Barceló Bávaro Palace it is a Premium Level perk.
Are premium drinks included in a Punta Cana all-inclusive?
Many resorts include a list of premium brands, and Unlimited-Luxury resorts include top-shelf spirits. Elsewhere, top labels may need a club-level upgrade or an extra charge, as at Lopesan and Princess, and some wines and champagnes are never included.
