Barceló Bávaro Palace is one of the largest and longest-running all-inclusive resorts on Bávaro Beach. Part of the Barceló Bávaro Grand Resort, which also includes the adults-only Barceló Bávaro Beach, it has its own 18-hole golf course, a 24-hour casino, two nightclubs and a train that carries guests across the property.

This Barceló Bávaro Palace review focuses on what decides whether the resort is right for you: how calm the beach is, which room to pick, how restaurant reservations work and whether Premium Level pays for itself. Facts were checked against Barceló’s official pages and current tour-operator listings in October 2026; policies change, so confirm anything critical before you pay.

Barceló Bávaro Palace review: the short verdict

Barceló Bávaro Palace is a big, busy, family-friendly resort whose strongest card is the beach. If your group mixes kids, teens, grandparents and a golfer or two, few Bávaro resorts give everyone this much to do on-site. If you picture a quiet, boutique-style escape with dinner wherever you like every night, this is not that resort, at least not without Premium Level.

Pros

  • Wide Bávaro beachfront with generally calm, reef-sheltered water
  • Huge range of on-site activities: 18-hole golf course, 24-hour casino, two nightclubs, kids and teen clubs
  • Free resort train every 20 minutes, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m.
  • More than 200 family rooms, including two-room and duplex layouts
  • Premium Level is a genuine upgrade, not just a nicer room

Cons

  • Very large resort: expect walking, busy buffets at peak times and a less personal feel
  • Standard guests are assured four à la carte dinners per week and can only book once on-site
  • La Comédie, Pirates Island waterpark, the U-Spa and golf carts cost extra for standard guests
  • Not adults-only: there is an adults-only pool, but children are part of the atmosphere

Location and beach: how calm is the water at Barceló Bávaro?

The resort sits on the southern part of Bávaro Beach, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by road from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). Barceló calls it one of the most stunning beaches in the world, and the marketing has a practical point: an offshore reef breaks much of the swell, so on most days the water is calmer than on the more exposed beaches further north. That makes it one of Bávaro’s better choices for young children, older relatives and anyone who wants to float rather than fight waves.

Two caveats. Calm water is not seaweed-free water: like the rest of this coast, the beach can receive sargassum in warmer months, so read our Punta Cana sargassum guide before choosing dates. And the resort is self-contained, so you will need a taxi for the bars and shops of El Cortecito and Los Corales (see our Bávaro, El Cortecito and Arena Gorda area guide). The hotel lists Blue Flag and Green Globe certifications on its official site.

Rooms at Barceló Bávaro Palace: standard vs Premium Level

All rooms have a private balcony or terrace. The real decision is which tier you want: standard rooms, or Premium Level, which works like a hotel within the hotel.

Standard rooms: good space, especially for families

  • Superior room (about 37 m²): fine for couples and small families who live outdoors.
  • Junior Suite (about 67 m²): much larger and sleeps bigger families.
  • Family Room (about 59 m²): two separate rooms, ideal with older kids.
  • Family Duplex (about 55 m²): split over two levels for more privacy.

Standard rooms can look over gardens, pools or The Lakes golf course rather than the sea. If an ocean view is important to you, that is the first argument for Premium Level.

Premium Level rooms: seafront views and much bigger suites

Premium Level categories start with the Seafront View Junior Suite (about 59 m²) and the Family Junior Suite Premium Level (about 97 m²), then step up to the Seafront View Suite, the Panoramic Seafront View Suite, the Seafront View Master Suite and a Presidential Suite. Barceló says Premium Level rooms get the best furniture and the resort’s seafront views.

Is Premium Level at Barceló Bávaro Palace worth it?

According to Barceló, Premium Level includes the following:

  • Private check-in and check-out in the Premium Level Lounge, plus late check-out subject to availability
  • 24-hour VIP room service, a pillow menu, an aromatherapy menu and an upgraded minibar
  • All operating à la carte restaurants, including La Comédie, without charge or limits, and the option to reserve before arrival
  • Free entrance to the Pirates Island Water Park
  • Access to the U-Spa hydromassage area, plus 10% off spa services and tours
  • Priority for restaurant, golf, spa and tour bookings, and access to the bars and restaurants of Barceló Bávaro Beach

Our take: Premium Level is worth it if at least two of these apply: you want à la carte dinners every night, your kids will use Pirates Island, you want a sea view, or you hate queuing at check-in after a long flight. It is harder to justify for a couple on a short stay who are happy at the buffets some nights, since four assured à la carte dinners per week may already cover them.

Price the upgrade for your whole party

Ask for the Premium Level supplement for everyone in the room, then compare it with what you would otherwise pay for Pirates Island entries, La Comédie and spa access. For families of four or more staying a full week, the included waterpark entry alone can change the math.

Restaurants and bars: how dining works at Barceló Bávaro Palace

Barceló’s official dining page lists eight à la carte restaurants, three buffets and 14 bars. The main venues are:

  • Miramar (international buffet) and Bohío Dominicano (Dominican buffet) for breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • El Coral: seafood à la carte at dinner; its breakfast and lunch buffet is reserved for Premium Level and Barceló loyalty guests
  • Santa Fe Steak House: grilled meats with a salad and dessert buffet
  • La Dolce Vita (Italian), México Lindo (Mexican) and La Fuente (Spanish)
  • Kyoto: Japanese and Asian fusion, with teppanyaki tables
  • La Comédie: French; included for Premium Level, surcharge for everyone else
  • El Hoyo 19 at the golf course and Strikers Sports Bar for casual food

The rules matter more than the list. À la carte dinners need a reservation, with groups capped at 12. Standard guests are assured four à la carte dinners per week and can only book during the stay; extra nights depend on availability. Premium Level guests get unlimited à la carte dinners and can reserve by email before arrival. In practice, book all your dinners on the first afternoon, starting with Kyoto’s teppanyaki tables. The Coffee, Rum and Cigar Lounge and the Cielo Bar at the adults-only pool are 18+, and the casino’s Black Jack bar is open 24 hours.

Pools, waterparks and kids’ clubs

The resort has four pools, including a semi-Olympic pool, an adults-only pool and a children’s pool. There are also two themed water parks. Barcy Water Park, aimed at small children, is free. Pirates Island Water Park costs extra for standard guests and is included for Premium Level. Barceló’s family-room pages have also offered free Barcy access plus a single Pirates Island entry per family on stays of at least four nights, so check whether your rate includes it.

The Barcy Kids Club runs a program for children aged 3 to 12, and teens aged 13 to 17 have the Xone teen club with non-alcoholic drinks. Babysitting costs extra. If waterslides are the main event, compare this resort with our best Punta Cana family resorts with waterparks guide.

Golf, casino, nightlife and spa

  • The Lakes golf course: an 18-hole, par-72 course redesigned by P.B. Dye, playing to 6,655 yards from the back tees. Guests get one complimentary green fee per player per night, subject to availability, but carts are mandatory and charged separately (Premium Level gets 10% off carts, club rental and lessons).
  • Casino: open 24 hours, with a bar inside.
  • Nightlife: two nightclubs, including an 18+ club open from 11:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. with a dress code (no shorts, sandals or tank tops). Its VIP lounge costs extra except for Premium Level guests.
  • Extras: bowling and escape rooms are available at an additional charge.
  • U-Spa: treatments and spa access cost extra, and the minimum age for specific treatments is 13. Premium Level includes access to the hydromassage area.

Practical tips before you book

  • Check-in and check-out: check-in from 3:00 p.m., check-out at noon.
  • Wi-Fi: free for guests.
  • Pets: not allowed, apart from certified guide and assistance dogs.
  • Getting there: pre-book a transfer and fill in the free Dominican e-ticket before you fly; our PUJ airport transfers and e-ticket guide explains both.
  • Taxes and tipping: check whether your quote includes Dominican taxes and service, and budget for tips and extras such as golf carts (see our all-inclusive taxes and tipping guide).

Barceló Bávaro Palace vs Hard Rock and Lopesan Costa Bávaro

These are the three mega-resorts most travelers compare. Hard Rock is louder, with a big waterpark and nightclub; Lopesan Costa Bávaro has the most modern design and a two-level infinity pool; Barceló Bávaro Palace wins on swimming conditions and on-site golf. See our full Hard Rock vs Lopesan Costa Bávaro vs Barceló Bávaro Palace breakdown. Couples without kids should also look at the adults-only Barceló Bávaro Beach next door.

Our verdict on Barceló Bávaro Palace

Barceló Bávaro Palace is a strong pick for families and mixed groups who want a calm, swimmable beach, on-site golf and enough activities to fill a week. Book a Family Room or Junior Suite if you are watching the budget, or Premium Level if you want sea views, unlimited à la carte dining and waterpark access built in. Couples looking for intimacy or a reservation-free dining plan will be happier elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the beach at Barceló Bávaro Palace good for swimming?

Yes. An offshore reef breaks much of the swell, so the water is usually calmer than on more exposed beaches further north, which suits children and less confident swimmers. Sargassum can still arrive in warmer months, so check recent conditions before you travel.

Is Premium Level at Barceló Bávaro Palace worth it?

It is worth it if you want à la carte dinners every night, a sea view, Pirates Island access or a private check-in lounge. Couples on a short stay who are happy with the buffets some nights may find a standard room enough.

Do you need reservations for restaurants at Barceló Bávaro Palace?

Yes, for à la carte dinners. Standard guests are assured four per week and book on-site; Premium Level guests get unlimited à la carte dinners and can reserve before arrival. Buffets need no reservation.

Is the Pirates Island waterpark included?

Not for standard guests, who pay an extra fee. It is included for Premium Level guests, and some family-room rates have included one entry per family on longer stays. The smaller Barcy Water Park is free.

Is Barceló Bávaro Palace adults-only?

No. It is a family-friendly resort with an adults-only pool and some 18+ bars. Its sister hotel in the same complex, Barceló Bávaro Beach, is the adults-only option.

How far is Barceló Bávaro Palace from Punta Cana airport?

Expect roughly 20 to 30 minutes by road from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), depending on traffic. A private transfer is the simplest option for families with luggage.
