Punta Cana with a baby or toddler: the short version

- Calmest water: Juanillo Beach (Cap Cana) and reef-sheltered southern Bávaro.

- Water: use bottled water for formula and bottles.
Find family resorts in Punta Cana with cribs and kids' pools
Planning Punta Cana with a toddler or a baby is one of the easiest Caribbean trips: short nonstop flights from much of the eastern US and Canada, a 15–40 minute airport transfer, and all-inclusive resorts where food is always close. But most “family” resorts are built for children aged 4 to 12. For under-4s, what matters is whether you get a crib, whether the kids’ pool is truly shallow, whether the beach has waves, and how far you push a stroller to breakfast.
We checked each resort’s baby and toddler services against official pages and recent tour-operator listings, and flag what to confirm before you book.
Is Punta Cana good for a baby or toddler?
Yes, with the right resort. Logistics are simple and most resorts have kids’ pools and family suites. The challenges are heat and sun, the size of some mega-resorts, and limited supervised childcare for babies. Choose a resort with a calm beach, a shallow splash area and a reasonably compact layout, and a week with a one- or two-year-old can be genuinely relaxing.
What matters most at a resort for under-4s
Kids’ club age limits and babysitting
The Explorer’s Club at the Dreams resorts accepts ages 3 to 12, but at Dreams Macao Beach and Dreams Cap Cana children must be fully potty-trained. RIU Land at Riu Palace Bávaro, the Bahia Scouts club at Bahia Principe and the Roxity Kids Club at Hard Rock all start at age 4 (Hard Rock lets under-4s stay in the club only with an adult). Barceló Bávaro Palace lists a Mini Club for ages 3 to 12. For babies, plan on a paid babysitter: Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana offers babysitting for up to two children per sitter with a two-hour minimum, and Lopesan asks you to request a sitter at least 24 hours ahead.
Cribs, high chairs and baby food
Cribs are usually free but limited in number, so request one in writing when you book and reconfirm a week before arrival. Lopesan Costa Bávaro states that cribs are complimentary but recommends emailing in advance because availability is limited. Bahia Principe lists cribs, high chairs, children’s menus and baby changing stations for its Punta Cana families. Majestic says it accommodates special nutritional needs for infants. What you should not count on is jarred baby food or your usual formula brand: buffets can mash fruit, vegetables, rice and eggs, but bring enough formula and any specific pouches for the whole trip.
Shallow pools, splash parks and the beach
Big waterpark slides usually have height minimums (Barceló’s Pirates Island slides require 4 feet). What a toddler actually uses is a shallow splash pool with small slides and fountains. On the beach, the calmest water is at Juanillo Beach in Cap Cana and the reef-sheltered southern stretch of Bávaro. Macao Beach and Uvero Alto are beautiful but face more open Atlantic swell; recent guest reviews at Dreams Macao Beach note strong waves, especially from December to March. Seaweed is another variable, so check our sargassum guide with the cleanest beaches for the month you travel.
Stroller-friendly layout
Big complexes such as Barceló Bávaro Palace, Hard Rock and the Bahia Principe complex run internal trains or trams (Barceló’s free train runs every 20 minutes), but folding a stroller five times a day gets old. Ask for a room near the main pool or buffet, and bring a light stroller that copes with sandy paths; Majestic, for example, notes that strollers cannot be rented at its Punta Cana resorts.

Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana: calmest beach for little swimmers
Hyatt Ziva sits on Juanillo Beach inside gated Cap Cana, about 15 minutes from the airport, which makes it the shortest transfer on this list for a baby who hates car seats. The water in front of the resort is typically calm and clear, and the Canapolis water park has shallow areas and ledges that toddlers can use with a parent. The kids’ club is aimed at children around 4 and up, so for younger children plan on the paid babysitting service (maximum two children per sitter, two-hour minimum, subject to availability). One rule to know: swim-up suites are only for guests aged 13 and over, so families with small children should book a standard or club suite.

Lopesan Costa Bávaro: best for nap-time logistics
Lopesan’s FAQ confirms three things parents of small children care about: cribs are complimentary (request in advance by email), room service is free, and there is an on-site medical center plus a pharmacy in The Boulevard village. Free room service is underrated with a napping toddler. The resort sits on calm, reef-sheltered southern Bávaro Beach, has a children’s pool and the Splash Island water park, and the Panchi Kids Club is listed for ages 4 to 12. Babysitting costs extra and must be booked 24 hours ahead at the lobby Public Relations desk.

Barceló Bávaro Palace: toddler water park and a gentle reef beach
Barceló’s all-inclusive includes the Barcy Water Park, a toddler-scale area with castles, small slides and waterfalls supervised by lifeguards, plus children’s pools and a Mini Club for ages 3 to 12. The beach is one of the more sheltered in Bávaro thanks to an offshore reef. The free train covers the long distances, and there are more than 200 family rooms, including a two-room Family Room for up to four adults and four children. Two caveats: babysitting is not included, and room service is only included for Premium Level guests.
Bahia Principe Explore Punta Cana: best budget option
The former Bahia Principe Grand Punta Cana (renamed in 2026) is the value pick. Its official family page lists cribs, high chairs, children’s menus and baby changing stations, plus family suites and connecting rooms. The Bahia Scouts kids’ club starts at 4, and babysitting is available for a fee. Note that 358 rooms are being renovated through late 2026, with one pool temporarily closed; our Bahia Principe Grand Punta Cana review explains which areas are affected.
Dreams Macao Beach and Hard Rock: better once your child turns 3 or 4
Dreams Macao Beach has a kids’ splash park and an Explorer’s Club from age 3 (potty-trained only), and guests report that cribs are arranged on request, but the beach often has surf. Hard Rock has three kids’ pools with waterslides and the Rockaway Bay water park; its Roxity Kids Club is for ages 4 to 12. For a wider list of family resorts with waterparks and lazy rivers, see our best Punta Cana family resorts with waterparks.
Also worth a look: Dreams Onyx (separate paid childcare for children too young for the Explorer’s Club), Majestic Mirage (families must book in the family section, and all rooms are suites) and the renovated Riu Palace Bávaro, whose RIU Land club for ages 4 to 12 includes a mini splash park. Flights, car seats and airport transfers with a baby
Every traveler, including infants, needs a passport for international flights. On most airlines, children under 2 can fly on a parent’s lap, but the FAA recommends a government-approved child restraint in their own seat; look for a car seat labeled as certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft so you can use it on the plane and in the transfer. The Dominican Republic’s free electronic entry and exit form (E-Ticket) covers the whole family: the official FAQ says children are included, adults complete the customs section, and one QR code is generated per family per trip.
Shared shuttles usually lack child seats. Private transfer companies typically offer them on request, sometimes for a small extra fee (one PUJ operator lists about US$15), so book the seat together with the transfer and confirm the weight range. Our Punta Cana airport transfers and E-Ticket guide compares taxis, private transfers and drive times by area. Cap Cana and southern Bávaro keep the ride short; Uvero Alto is 40 minutes or more.
If one parent travels alone with the child
Carry a signed consent letter from the other parent and a copy of the birth certificate. Airlines and immigration officers can ask for proof that both parents agree to the trip, especially if surnames differ.
What to pack for a baby or toddler in Punta Cana
Baby items are scarce or expensive in resort shops. Our full Punta Cana packing list covers adult essentials; for the little ones, add:
- Formula, pouches and snacks for the whole trip, plus a few extra days in case of flight delays.
- Swim diapers (most pools require them) and enough regular diapers for at least the first few days.
- Sun protection: UPF swimsuit or rash guard, wide-brim hat, baby sunglasses, mineral sunscreen and a pop-up beach tent for shade.
- Insect repellent suitable for your child’s age, and a stroller mosquito net for evenings.
- Crib sheet and a white-noise machine for nights.
- Light stroller or carrier, bottle brush and travel dish soap.
- Medicine kit: fever reducer in the correct dose for your child’s weight, oral rehydration salts, thermometer, diaper cream and any prescriptions.
Health and safety basics for little ones
Water: tap water in Punta Cana is not for drinking. Use bottled water for formula, bottles, pacifiers and brushing teeth; resorts provide it free in minibars and restaurants. Our guide to drinking water, buffet safety and health tips explains ice, buffets and stomach-bug prevention in more detail.
Sun and heat: pediatric guidance is to keep babies under 6 months out of direct sun and to use small amounts of sunscreen only where shade and clothing are not enough. Plan pool time before 11 a.m. and after 3 p.m., and use the midday heat for a long nap.
Mosquitoes and vaccines: dengue circulates in the Caribbean, so cover arms and legs at dusk and use repellent approved for your child’s age (CDC advises not using repellent on babies under 2 months). The CDC recommends hepatitis A vaccination for travelers from age 1 and an early dose for infants 6 to 11 months, and an early MMR dose for infants 6 to 11 months traveling abroad. Talk to your pediatrician 4 to 6 weeks before departure.
Medical care: Bávaro has private hospitals and clinics used to treating tourists, and many resorts have an on-site doctor (usually for a fee). Buy travel insurance that covers the baby and medical evacuation, and save the address of the nearest clinic. Our Punta Cana medical care and hospitals guide lists what to expect and how insurance billing works.
Pool and beach safety
Resort pools are not fenced and lifeguards are not on duty everywhere. Keep a toddler within arm’s reach near any water, use a properly fitted life vest rather than inflatable arm bands, and respect the red flags on the beach.
Our verdict for families with under-4s
Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana offers the calmest water and shortest transfer. Lopesan Costa Bávaro wins on practical services, and Barceló Bávaro Palace has the best toddler-scale water park. On a budget, Bahia Principe Explore Punta Cana covers the basics. Whichever you choose, request your crib and car seat in writing before you fly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Punta Cana safe for a toddler?
Yes, a reputable all-inclusive resort is very manageable with a toddler. The main risks are sun, heat, unfenced pools and tap water, so use bottled water, plan shade and stay within reach near water.
Do Punta Cana resorts have kids’ clubs for babies?
Very few do. Most start at 3 or 4 and require potty training. For babies, resorts such as Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana, Lopesan Costa Bávaro and Barceló Bávaro Palace offer paid babysitting; book at least a day ahead.
Do resorts in Punta Cana provide cribs?
Most family resorts provide cribs on request, usually free, but numbers are limited. Request one when you book and reconfirm by email before arrival.
Which Punta Cana beach is calmest for babies?
Juanillo Beach in Cap Cana (home to Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana) and the reef-sheltered southern part of Bávaro Beach (Barceló Bávaro Palace, Lopesan Costa Bávaro) are usually the calmest. Macao Beach and Uvero Alto tend to have bigger waves.
Do I need a car seat in Punta Cana?
Shared shuttles and taxis usually do not supply one. Book a private transfer that provides an infant or child seat on request, or bring your own aircraft-approved car seat and use it on the plane and in the transfer.
What is the best age to take a baby to Punta Cana?
Many parents find 6 months to 3 years easy: babies nap well in air-conditioned rooms and toddlers love splash pools. Before 6 months, sun exposure is the main limitation, so choose a resort with plenty of shade.
