Bahia Principe Grand Punta Cana at a glance
- New name: since the April 2026 brand overhaul it is Bahia Principe Explore Punta Cana; the hotel, beach and complex are the same.
- Renovation: 820 rooms were refreshed in 2024–2025, and a final phase covering 358 rooms in Villas 30–39 runs from April 10, 2026 to around the end of November 2026 (one operator lists December 20).
- Best for: budget-minded families, groups and first-timers who want lots of dining choice across the Bahia Principe complex.
- Not ideal for: couples wanting quiet luxury, or anyone who dislikes big resorts and long walks.
- Beach: directly on Arena Gorda, about 25 km from Punta Cana Airport (PUJ).
Check Bahia Principe Explore Punta Cana dates and rates
If you are searching for a Bahia Principe Grand Punta Cana review, the first thing to know is that the name on your booking may look different in 2026. Bahia Principe replaced its old Grand, Luxury, Sunlight and Fantasia categories with two sub-brands, and this Arena Gorda family resort is now officially called Bahia Principe Explore Punta Cana (“formerly Bahia Principe Grand Punta Cana,” as the brand’s own website puts it). It is also in the middle of the last phase of a multi-year room renovation. This review explains what changed, what is open while work continues, and who should book.
From Grand to Explore: what the 2026 brand change means
Around April 1, 2026, Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts (now run through a joint venture between Grupo Piñero and Hyatt) introduced two sub-brands. Bahia Principe Escape covers adults-only resorts focused on wellness and premium dining, while Bahia Principe Explore covers resorts for families and groups. In the Bávaro complex that means Explore Punta Cana, Explore Turquesa, Explore Esmeralda and Explore Legend (the former Fantasia) on the family side, and Escape Ambar and Escape Aquamarine for adults only.
For guests, the rename is mostly cosmetic: same staff, same beach, same complex. The more practical change came a week earlier, on March 25, 2026, when Bahia Principe resorts joined World of Hyatt, so members can earn and redeem points at participating properties. Check that your specific rate and booking channel qualify before counting on points. You will still see the old Grand Punta Cana name on many booking sites, tour-operator packages and reviews.
Renovation status: what is new and what is still closed
According to a November 2025 report in the Dominican press, 532 rooms were renovated in 2024 and another 288 in 2025, for 820 rooms with updated design, furniture and modernized bathrooms. The same phase brought a refurbished lobby and lobby bar, a fully remodeled Nácar main buffet, updated Nomad (Mongolian-inspired) and Flame (steakhouse) restaurants, a new coffee shop serving Dominican coffee, and refreshed pools.
The final phase covers 358 rooms in Villas 30–39. Air Canada Vacations lists the work from April 10 to November 30, 2026, with all rooms and areas expected to reopen on December 1; WestJet Vacations gives December 20, 2026 as the end date. Work hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. During the project:
- The Bougainvillia lobby and its bar move to the Nácar lobby.
- The pool next to the affected villas and its pool bar are closed; four other pools stay open.
- Meals from the Bouganville buffet move to the Nácar buffet, with extra breakfast and lunch service at Las Olas.
- Maiko’s Japanese menu moves to Takara at Explore Turquesa, and Il Capriccio’s Italian dishes are folded into the Mexican restaurant at Las Olas.
- Theater shows move to the Nácar lobby terrace and Bahia Principe Village.
Booking for November or December 2026?
Ask the resort to place you away from Villas 30–39 and confirm whether the renovation has finished before your dates. End dates differ between tour operators, and completion dates can slip.
Layout: a big hotel inside an even bigger complex
This is not a compact resort. Tour-operator listings say the former Grand Bávaro was merged into Grand Punta Cana on November 1, 2024, creating a single hotel with 1,428 rooms, mostly junior suites plus two-bedroom suites, spread over low-rise villas. If you read our older Bahia Principe Grand Punta Cana vs Grand Bávaro comparison, keep in mind that the two now operate as one property.
Around it sits the wider Bahia Principe Bávaro complex. Guests can use the shared facilities and specialty restaurants of Explore Turquesa (with reservations, subject to availability), the Las Olas Beach House on the sand, La Isla food-truck court, and Bahia Principe Village, a small “town” with shops, a sports bar, a casino and an 18+ nightclub. Electric trams link the different areas, and you will use them: walking from a far villa to the beach can take a while in the heat. Exchange privileges may be limited during closures or private events.
Rooms: which category to book
Almost every room is a junior suite with air conditioning, a ceiling fan, safe, minibar, coffee maker and a terrace or balcony. The official site currently lists Junior Suite Superior, Junior Suite (king or two doubles), a Deluxe Junior Suite described as fully renovated, Junior Suite Premium, Family Suite (up to four adults and one child), Family Deluxe Suite and two-bedroom suites (up to six adults and one child). There is also a Junior Suite Superior PLAY category aimed at families with children.
Our advice: pay the small premium for a category described as renovated or Deluxe, and ask for a villa close to the lobby or main pool if you have young children or limited mobility. Two-bedroom suites pair a king bedroom with a second room that has a double sofa bed, each with its own bathroom and TV, which is useful for families with teens or two couples traveling together.

The beach at Arena Gorda
The resort sits directly on Arena Gorda, the long white-sand stretch north of Bávaro that is shared with several big resort complexes. Expect a lively beach with a beach bar, watersports and plenty of loungers, plus a designated family beach area. Non-motorized watersports (kayak, paddle board, snorkeling gear) are included for one hour per guest per day, subject to availability; diving and catamaran trips cost extra. Arena Gorda is more open to the Atlantic than the reef-sheltered southern end of Bávaro, so check the flags before swimming with children. Our Bávaro, El Cortecito and Arena Gorda area guide compares the beaches and what is within reach.

Dining: buffets, à la carte rules and Las Olas
The hotel has two buffets (Nácar and Bouganville) and four à la carte restaurants: Nomad (contemporary Mongolian), Flame (steakhouse), Maiko (Japanese, with sushi and teppanyaki) and Il Capriccio (Italian), all with reservations and a semi-formal dress code. La Isla adds food trucks with international dishes, a kids’ club, playground and climbing wall. At Las Olas Beach House you will find a beach buffet plus Thali (Indian), Rodizio (grill), The Greek, Tequila (Mexican) and The Fish Market (seafood, 18+).
The catch is access. Tour operators list three à la carte dinners per week on the standard all-inclusive plan (some promotions add a fourth), reservations can be made up to 10 days ahead in the Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts app, and popular slots fill quickly. Book on arrival day at the latest. Our Punta Cana all-inclusive dining guide explains how reservation systems and dress codes work across resorts, and the taxes and tipping guide covers what is (and is not) included in your rate.
Kids, teens and family facilities
This is where the resort earns its family reputation. The Bahia Scouts kids’ club takes children aged 4 to 12, there is a separate teens’ club, and the resort lists a waterpark, a kids’ pool and a family beach area. The official family page mentions cribs, high chairs, children’s menus and baby changing stations, plus family suites and connecting rooms; babysitting is available for a fee. Other services include a spa, gym, free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, a convention center and airport transfers bookable through Amstar. Punta Blanca Golf Club is a short distance away.

Who should book (and who should skip)
Book it if you are a family or group on a budget, you want plenty of pools and restaurants without paying luxury prices, and you like the energy of a big resort town with a casino and shows. It also works for multi-family reunions thanks to the family and two-bedroom suites.
Skip it if you want calm, gourmet dining without reservations, or a short walk from room to sand. Couples might prefer the adults-only Escape resorts in the same complex. If you are weighing similar mid-price family resorts, our comparison of Caribe Deluxe Princess vs Grand Bávaro Princess vs Bahia Principe Grand Punta Cana sets them side by side, and the Bahia Principe Esmeralda review covers the sister resort in the same complex.

Our verdict
Bahia Principe Explore Punta Cana (still widely sold as Grand Punta Cana) is a solid budget family pick that has been meaningfully refreshed since 2024. Its strength is variety: pools, kids’ facilities and a long list of restaurants across the complex. Its weaknesses are scale, limited à la carte access and a busy beach. If you travel before the end of 2026, request a room away from the renovation zone; from 2027, all room blocks should be renovated, which makes it an even better value.
