Majestic Colonial Punta Cana review: the short version

  • Status: closed for renovation since April 2026. Majestic Resorts now says it reopens on November 5, 2026. Earlier announcements said November 12.
  • Confirmed upgrades: more than 600 rooms fully redone, with a new bathroom, an indoor bathtub and an outdoor Jacuzzi in every room. There are also 30 new Family Suites, the new Toscana Italian restaurant, and a renovated Taíno restaurant and Supreme buffet.
  • Still to be confirmed: the opening date of the new Caribbean Water Park, which the official site lists as “coming soon”.
  • Best for: families and wedding groups on a mid-range budget, and couples who book The Club (18+).
  • Our advice: worth booking, but leave some margin if you travel in the first weeks after reopening.

Check Majestic Colonial dates after the reopening

This Majestic Colonial Punta Cana review is different from a normal hotel review, because right now the resort is closed. Majestic Colonial, the original Majestic resort on Arena Gorda, which opened in 2005, shut in April 2026 for its biggest renovation so far. Majestic Resorts now puts the investment at US$40 million, up from the US$35 million in its first announcement. Below we separate what is confirmed by Majestic from what is still planned, and explain what it means if you are thinking of booking a stay from November 2026 onward.

When does Majestic Colonial Punta Cana reopen?

The latest official date is November 5, 2026. It appears on the resort’s page on majestic-resorts.com and in a press release Majestic issued on September 17, 2026. The earlier release from May 2026, and some tour-operator listings, gave November 12, 2026. Operators list the closure as starting in April 2026, with slightly different start dates.

What this means for you: if you booked through a tour operator for early or mid-November, check that your reservation reflects the current date and the room category you chose. Renamed and converted rooms (see the Family Suites below) are the most likely place for mix-ups. If your dates are flexible, a stay from late November or December gives the resort a few weeks to settle in after reopening. That period also falls after the end of hurricane season. Our best time to visit Punta Cana guide explains month by month what to expect.

Confirmed vs planned

Majestic’s September 2026 release describes all the changes in the future tense (“will feature”, “will be converted”). The official resort page now presents the rooms and restaurants as done, but lists the water park as “coming soon” with no date. We treat the rooms and restaurants as confirmed for the reopening and the water park as planned, until the resort announces its opening.

What the US$40 million renovation includes

Rooms: new bathrooms, bathtubs and outdoor Jacuzzis everywhere

Majestic says more than 600 rooms are being fully transformed in both sections of the resort, the Family Section (all ages) and The Club (adults only, 18+). The May release put the total at 636 rooms after the conversions. Every room gets a new bathroom, an indoor bathtub and an outdoor Jacuzzi. That is a real step up, because an outdoor Jacuzzi usually belongs to premium categories at mid-range resorts.

The room categories on the official site include the Junior Suite (Outdoor Jacuzzi), Junior Suite Ocean View (Outdoor Jacuzzi), Majestic Junior Suite (Swim Up) and Colonial Jr. Suite Oceanfront, plus Colonial Club versions of the swim-up and oceanfront suites for The Club.

New Family Suites for up to six guests

The renovation converts 30 existing rooms into a new category called the Family Suite (Outdoor Jacuzzi). According to Majestic, each one is about 1,025 sq ft and sleeps up to six. It has a main bedroom with a king bed, a separate living area with two Murphy beds and a sofa bed, two bathrooms and an outdoor Jacuzzi. With only 30 of them, they are likely to be the first rooms to sell out on school-holiday dates, so book early if you need one. Restaurants: Toscana, Taíno and the Supreme buffet

  • Toscana (new): an Italian restaurant with an outdoor terrace.
  • Taíno (renovated): fully redone, with a new outdoor terrace. Majestic’s own sources describe its cuisine differently (Caribbean on the website, Mexican in the press release), so check the menu on arrival.
  • Supreme International Buffet (renovated): the main buffet, with a new interior.

Majestic has not published a full post-renovation list of every restaurant and bar, so we will not guess one. The official site sets a dress code for the fine-dining restaurants: long trousers, closed shoes and a collared shirt with sleeves for men and teen boys, and casual-elegant wear for women. Our all-inclusive dining guide explains how reservations and dress codes usually work in Punta Cana.

Pools, gym and the new Caribbean Water Park

All pool decks and the fitness center are being renovated. The headline addition is the Caribbean Water Park, a multi-zone park with several water slides, a lazy river and separate areas for different age groups. Its design draws on Los Haitises National Park, with mangroves, limestone and Taíno-inspired details. It is the most exciting part of the project for families, and also the part with the least certainty: as of late October 2026 the official site says “coming soon” without a date.

  • Spa, laundry and golf cost extra

What stays the same: beach, location and The Club

Majestic Colonial is on Arena Gorda, next to Majestic Elegance and Majestic Mirage. Majestic says the beach is about a five-minute walk from the lobby, with free umbrellas, hammocks and towels. In its May 2026 release, Majestic called the main pool one of the largest in the destination. Like the rest of the coast, Arena Gorda can get sargassum in the warmer months.

The Club (adults only, 18+) is still the resort’s upgrade tier. Its rooms are part of the renovation, and the official site lists Colonial Club versions of the swim-up and oceanfront suites, plus a pillow menu in that section. Majestic has not published a full post-reopening list of Club benefits, so check what is included when you book. What is included, and what costs extra

  • Included: meals and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), minibar products, Wi-Fi, private parking, non-motorized water sports, the gym, and tennis and basketball courts.
  • Kids: a Kids Club for ages 4 to 12. Babysitting is available.
  • Extra cost: spa treatments, laundry and green fees.
  • Times: check-in at 3 p.m., check-out at 12 p.m. Early check-in and late check-out depend on availability and cost extra.
  • Booking direct: at the time of writing, the official site asks for a 20% deposit with the balance due at check-in, and allows free cancellation up to 7 days before arrival. Terms can change, so read them when you book.

Majestic Colonial vs Majestic Elegance and Majestic Mirage

Before the renovation, Colonial was the most affordable and the liveliest of the three Majestic resorts side by side on Arena Gorda. Elegance sat in the middle, and the all-suite Mirage was at the top. The 2026 upgrade narrows the gap in the rooms, since every room now has an outdoor Jacuzzi, and the new water park could make Colonial the strongest family option of the three once it opens. Final prices after the reopening will decide where it ends up on value. Our Majestic Elegance vs Mirage vs Colonial comparison and our Majestic Elegance and Mirage review cover the sister resorts.

Should you book Majestic Colonial for 2026–2027?

Yes, if you are a family on a mid-range budget who wants a newly renovated room with an outdoor Jacuzzi on a good beach, or a group planning a wedding. Our Punta Cana destination weddings guide covers how resort packages work. It also suits couples who want The Club without paying Mirage prices.

Wait or look elsewhere if the water park is the main reason for your trip and you travel in November or December 2026. Until Majestic announces its opening, consider one of the family resorts with waterparks already running. Also hold off if you dislike the small problems that can come with any newly reopened resort, such as staff still settling in or minor maintenance.

Our verdict on Majestic Colonial Punta Cana

On paper, the 2026 renovation is just what Majestic Colonial needed. Every room is redone with an outdoor Jacuzzi, there are 30 two-bathroom Family Suites, a new Italian restaurant and renovated pools and buffet, and a large water park is still to come. The confirmed parts make it a strong mid-range family and wedding choice from November 5, 2026. Book with a little flexibility in the first weeks, and do not choose it for the water park until Majestic gives an opening date.
